    Robots die in de ruimte of diep in de zee werken, kunnen niet zo gemakkelijk hersteld worden. Onderzoekers vonden hier een oplossing voor. ‘Deze robothuid lijkt op de onze.’

    Plaatsen verkennen waar mensen moeilijk kunnen komen, dat is bij uitstek iets waar robots geschikt voor zijn. De kans dat er in zo’n uitdagende omgeving schade wordt opgelopen, is echter groot. Even terug naar huis voor een reparatie is op dat moment moeilijk. Een team van de Amerikaanse Cornell University onder leiding van professor Rob Shepherd ziet een oplossing in het combineren van een nieuw composietmateriaal met optische sensors. Met deze kunstmatige ‘huid’ zou een robot niet alleen schade herkennen, maar die ook kunnen herstellen.

    Het Organic Robotics Lab van Shepherd experimenteert al jaren met fiberoptische sensoren om zachte, rekbare huiden voor robots te maken. Door de sensoren te verbinden met een speciaal elastomeer ontstaat het SHeaLDS-materiaal dat flexibel, sterk en zelfhelend is. Komt er een kleine scheur in het materiaal, dan sluit deze automatisch in ongeveer een minuut. De volgende stap is het materiaal nog betere sensoreigenschappen te geven, zodat het zijn omgeving beter kan ‘voelen’.

    Om SHeaLDS te demonstreren, bouwden de onderzoekers een zeester-achtige robot met vier benen met een feedbackmechanisme. Daarna maakten ze zes keer een insnede in een van de poten, wat de robot meteen detecteerde. Deze paste zijn bewegingen aan om de beschadigde poot te sparen, terwijl het SHeaLDS-materiaal de opening terug sloot. ‘Het heeft eigenschappen die niet verschillen van menselijke huid’, zegt Shepherd. ‘Net als bij ons gaat het herstellen van schade door zuur of hitte niet zo goed omdat de chemische eigenschappen van het materiaal veranderen. Maar een snee kunnen we goed helen.’
